- My Life After the Death of My Mother Top Panel Detail
- Creator
- Bertram Samples
- Description
- This portion of the mural portrays scenes from Samples’ youth in Houston’s 5th Ward. A collage-like scene unfolds in the window panes, with each memory flowing into the next. In the bottom right, the artist is a young boy spending time with his dog. Above, he has grown older and climbed a tree. In the upper middle panel, Samples is a dissatisfied teen. In the lower left scene, he is with his mother on her deathbed, which then blends into the upper left, where he is surrounded by the looming presence of a police officer and a marionette puppet, illustrating the external factors outside of his control.
