- Creator
- Abe Washington
- Description
- The left side of this section of the mural shows Reconstruction, during which educational opportunities for African Americans were greatly expanded. A group of children writes the words “Emancipation Proclamation” on a chalkboard beneath a portrait of Abraham Lincoln. Below them, adult African Americans are reading, perhaps having taken advantage of the newly available educational opportunities. In the center, Booker T. Washington delivers his 1895 Atlanta Compromise speech, in which he laid out his vision for racial uplift via education. On the right, a long stream of Black graduates prepares to enter the workforce.
