- Creator
- Maurice Ellison
- Description
- This mural, Ellison’s Hope no. 2, features various protest scenes. On the left, a mass of Black people stand together, embodying the central woman’s locket’s message: “To Unite We Must Stand Together Divided We Fall.” In the middle, there are several protest signs, as well as two portraits of Tommie Smith and John Carlos, the US track athletes who protested during the national anthem at the 1968 Summer Olympics. In the background, a bald eagle holds a broken lynch rope in its beak and clutches the law in its talons, embodying Ellison’s persisting patriotism and faith in the law to protect Black Americans’ rights and safety. Richard Nixon and Lyndon Johnson are pictured on the right.
