- Description
- The central figure of this scene is turned away from the viewer. Depending upon interpretation, he is either lifting the American flag to reveal the hidden face of the nation or pulling it down to conceal it. Behind the flag, in the foreground, robed Klansmen burn a cross. In the background on the left, a single eye peers out from behind the flag. In the sole of the main figure's shoe, a trio of chained, naked people is pictured, perhaps representing the hold of a slave ship. A portrait of John F. Kennedy looms large in this section, enmeshed with the stripes of the American flag.
